Engagement Photos: What to Wear

Portrait photography, engagement photography, engament photographer outfit ideas, what to wear for your engagement session

Looking for ideas on what to wear for your engagement photos? There are many ways to go about picking a style. But the number one thing we say about any type of photo shoot, is be comfortable and be yourself! Take this opportunity to pamper yourself, get your hair or make-up done for the shoot… these photos will be seen by many and treasured by you for the rest of your life. There is nothing better than the glow of a newly engaged couple!

#1 BE COMFORTABLE This is usually our number one tip because there is truly nothing more important. If you’re not comfortable, you will be distracted, and it will show in the photos. If you can rock heels, wear them… if you’re more comfortable in flats– treat yourself to the pair you’ve been eyeing in the store window or strap on those trusty gladiator sandals that seem to look great with anything you wear. To generate the most authentic session, we believe there needs to be a perfect blend of comfort and style. We like to take things off the beaten path, so wear shoes you are comfortable walking around in.

#2 COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER Don’t wear competing patterns, but don’t wear matching outfits either. I spent some time in Seoul, where the style is insanely ahead of it’s time, but oddly the stylish couples not only match… they often wear almost the exact same outfit. Interesting I know. But I learned this is the only way to visually show their couple status, since PDA in South Korea isn’t culturally kosher. Thankfully this isn’t the case here in the US, so leave the matching outfits at home, and let’s photograph you guys in cute complimentary outfits kissing in the woods, or holding hands on the strand… you get our point. Not sure what complimentary outfits are? Check out our below examples for the urban, classic and casual couple below. #3 LOCATION Think about the location of the shoot, dress accordingly and bring a fun prop that correlates with the location. For example, if your shoot is at the beach… think beach picnic, matching beach chairs, sandals, beach ball…. maybe a kite?! Pick a location that is meaningful to you as a couple. This isn’t always possible, but it is a great idea to capture shots of you in your home space, town where you two live… fell in love, where he proposed. You get the idea!

#4 MULTIPLE LOOKS It can be fun to have multiple outfit options. If you have the opportunity for one wardrobe change… take it! But don’t plan on more than two looks– it can be very time consuming and take away from the overall flow of the day. Maybe one look is more dressy and one is more casual. Just a thought! It is always best to bring an extra outfit and if it works out, it works out. Always better to over prepare.

#5 SAME PAGE Make sure both members of the couple are on the same page for the look, feel, location and length of shoot. We know it isn’t natural to be photographed for an extended period of time, but this is YOUR TIME! You will be so thankful in 20 years, that you took an evening/afternoon/morning to devote to freezing this super special time in your life. Think of this shoot as a test run for the wedding day! Get used to getting your photo taken, because you are the star of this show.
