We’ll probably never photograph another
engagement party wedding like this one. Mel and Chris, from Santa Monica, are what you would call non-traditional and it made for an amazing night at Studio 1342 in Los Angeles.
They got engaged in Fiji, after a relaxing week where Chris got to surf and Mel relaxed on the beach. Here’s how Chris described the proposal:
I proposed at sunset on a small island in Fiji. I hid the ring in a small pocket in my camera bag and sweated my way through airport security. Six days into the trip and hours before I proposed, nosy Mel decided she really wanted to use my camera. I wouldn’t let her. She got mad. After a long day hiking on another island we came back and just before the sun went down I made her wake from a nap and walk out to the water. She was too tired to argue and I got down on one knee.

As the wedding planning began, they decided to throw convention aside and host an Engagement Party that would turn into a wedding… and they did exactly that. Guests arrived congratulating the couple on their engagement & checking out her ring, not expecting to be thrown a complete curve-ball mid party. About an “LA hour” into the party (for any non Angelinos out there, this means about 1 hour and 3o mins), they ran a movie/slideshow recapping their relationship, and at the end they said “Thank You For Coming To Our…”, at that point people started to get suspicious. About 15 seconds later, the word “Wedding” flashed onto the screen. The crowd went wild, including the bride who watched from the above loft/office, where she was supposed to be changing into her wedding dress! It might be difficult to top her reaction to the reveal, they had successfully pranked everyone.
As you browse through the photos below you will see evidence of their personalities throughout the night. From the projected movies [Endless Summer and Wayne’s World] on the walls, to the pizza truck as their first meal, and their generally laid-back vibes – it was the perfect night for them.
Chris’ favorite thing about Mel is her endless compassion, he says she has the biggest heart of anyone he knows. His favorite feature on her is her beautiful hazel eyes and mermaid long hair -which happened to be flowing extra and mermaid-like on this particular night.
We thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this unique night and chasing these two love birds around as they fooled their family + friends. At the end of the evening the chalkboard in front of the venue read Welcome! #MortandMel #MarriedPranksters. It’s safe to say we would enjoy running into Chris + Mel around town and sharing a drink or two with these #MarriedPranksters.
