It’s always fun when you get to shoot in your own backyard. Not literally our own backyard in this case, but El Porto beach, our first California home. A former co-worker of mine was looking for some shots to take to her agency in Germany because her husband transferred jobs and she is looking to pursue modeling in Eastern Europe.
As always, we started with a questionnaire that asked in detail what she was looking for. A few of the questions included:
- Wardrobe. Can you provide all the clothes? Look at the type of clothes the models are wearing in the shots you want to emulate and try to grab clothes like that. Avoid things with big logos/words and think bright colors.
- Do you have a location in mind?
- Do you have a mood in mind? Fun? Serious? Combo?
- Will you do your own makeup. Natural, but touched-up would be good for this type of shoot.
After establishing her goals, which were slightly ambiguous, we decided to add a few of our own goals to the shoot as well. When a client is somewhat unsure of the direction they want from the shoot, there’s nothing wrong with establishing a few of your own objectives. In fact, it might be essential. Often clients will become more relaxed if you have a “take charge” attitude.
The goal in this shoot was to mimic some of the work seen in a Lululemon campaign – the popular fitness/yoga brand. Christina was the perfect model for this. We started with some headshots and general California lifestyle, and then moved more toward the Lulu direction toward the end. Hope you enjoy.
